RRNW TRACK PROGRAM
Track cycling is done on a bicycle racing track, also known as a velodrome.
There are only 20 tracks, or velodromes, in the U.S. today and not all of
those are functioning. The Northwest is lucky to have Marymoor Velodrome
which is located in Marymoor Park in Redmond. Marymoor Velodrome was built
in the 1970's,
and it is 400 meters in length which is now considered a bit
outdated. The new tracks being built are only 250 meters. For more details
on the Marymoor Velodrome and track cycling in general, go to:

Track
cycling demands track bikes which may seem very odd to the newcomer.
Track bikes don't have brakes,
and they have a fixed gear which means it's
impossible to coast. Riders come to a stop by backpedaling and gradually
slowing to a stop.
It's actually safer for all riders to be on fixed gear
bikes so no one can throw the brakes on in the middle of the pack. Rad
Racing NW is lucky enough to be sponsored by Fuji Track bikes:
www.fujibikes.com, on which some of our riders have won National Titles.
Marymoor Velodrome is the only track in Washington State. There is a short,
indoor track located just outside of Vancouver, B.C. and another short track
in Portland.
The Rad Track Team is open to any Rad rider who wants to race, or riders
looking for another training option. There is no obligation to race. The
track racing season runs from May through the end of August. Weather
permitting, track workouts will start mid-March. Marymoor Velodrome hosts
Tuesday night training sessions from 6PM to 8PM, approximately. Starting in
April, we'll be working out Sunday mornings unless there is a criterium or
road race that the majority of trackies will be doing.
Once the racing season starts, there are 3 nights of track racing to choose
from.
Monday night racing is for brand new riders and our youngest juniors
(13 and under). Wednesday night is for Masters and Category 4 Men and Women.
In the past, the officials have approved our more experienced juniors racing
in these categories. And Friday night is for Category 1-3 Men and Women. Our
older juniors and those who intend to compete at the National Championships
usually race on Friday night to gain experience in a more competitive
environment.
